Dutch Motorists Get Crash Course in Cycling Thanks to Climate Activists In a bid to save the world from overheating, thousands of climate change activists decided to give Holland another traditional Dutch flavor by masterminding an impromptu bike promotion event. Gluing themselves to the asphalt, they ably blocked a major motorway in The Hague - all in protest against Dutch fossil fuel subsidies. "The Hague is consistently the worst traffic city in the Netherlands", said one activist dressed in an emerald green leotard and Mermaid Man rubber flipper boots, "We were just saving everyone the inevitable frustration of sitting in traffic. Plus, we thought motorists could use a crash course in cycling. It's good for their health and for the planet." To the activists' credit, the surprise blockage provided a golden opportunity for many motorists to rediscover their long-abandoned bicycles stashed away in their garages. Dusted and rusted, the bikes were thrust into the spotlight and grudgingly mounted by their driver-owners, who were compelled to swap horsepower for pedal power. Meanwhile, with the motorway occupied, dutiful police officers gallantly doused the ever-so-slightly-toasty activists squatting in the noon sunlight, with the aid of water cannons - a gesture the activists accepted gratefully, given that they came prepared with umbrellas and swimming attire. "Whoever planned this demonstration must be a genius", remarked one onlooker. "They've effortlessly fused climate activism with Holland's biggest stereotype - bicycles. I guess Dutch motorists commuting on bikes is no longer the exception but will soon be the norm." The climate campaigners, mainly from Extinction Rebellion, remained unmoved - quite literally - from their stance, promising a relentless 'Bike-In' on the roadway until the Dutch government pedals back on fossil fuel subsidies. "We'll return for a daily dose of water cannon sprinkles if we must," said an activist sporting a snorkel mask and inflatable floaties.
