RIO DE JANERO - Brazil's beloved football team, Flamengo, demonstrated their utmost sportsmanship on Thursday by graciously releasing coach Jorge Sampaoli from his contract four years early, allowing the Argentinian plenty of time to peruse new opportunities and enjoy an extended holiday. Sampaoli, renowned for his stints at Argentina, Sevilla and Marseille, was reportedly blinded by the sunniest charm of Brasil when he committed to Flamengo in April. His contract, due to expire at the end of 2024, was gloriously dropped like a poorly defended ball last week. In a manner befitting pure sportsmanship, Flamengo announced on their social media channels, "The board thanks the professional (Sampaoli) and wishes him well in his career." The statement, undoubtedly diplomatic and courteous, was like an elegant header into the net of public relations. Sampaoli has faced difficulties fitting into the Flamengo squad, his Argentine tango presumably not meshing well with the Brazilian samba. However, his recent failure to clinch a title for Flamengo was the ultimate bossa nova dance step that sent him twirling out of the door. With Sampaoli exiting stage left, rumors are already spreading faster than a bicycle kick about who'll wear the glamorous and definitely-completely-safe Flamengo coach badge next. One name on everybody's lips is Tite, known for his stint with the Brazil national team. If anyone can samba their way out of Flamengo's current funk, fans are hoping it's him. Flamengo supporters are now left wondering if the next coach will have the right moves; will he samba, tango or, for the love of football, even attempt the floss? Regardless, they'll be tuning in to see if Flamengo can get their rhythm back and samba their way to victory.
