Where else could hot-blooded rugby players cool off post-match besides the shade of a World War I War Memorial? Soon after, by the grace of the sporting gods, an Astroturf all-weather pitch appeared – a testament to Aberdeen's commitment to sports – or sheer desperation to keep their athletes perpetually occupied, considering the notoriously unpredictable Scottish weather. The earth trembled and the hallowed ground buried its past to make room for hockey, cricket, and football. As the Astroturf rolled out, the demise of muddy confrontations was bewailed by laundry services across the city. One must suppose the savings on detergent was the city’s unique tribute to sustainability. Interestingly, the conversion of Rubislaw from a somber site of remembrance to a jovial field of frolics did meet some hockey-stick-sized resistance. The grumbling ghosts of Grammar School students past were forced to adapt to new age sports such as Astroturf sliding contests and mud-free rugby. But no poltergeist could rival the joy of a sports field filled with joyous laughter, high fives and the occasional collective groan when a so-promising-ball rolls away. So, there it is - Rubislaw Playing Fields. A testimony to the great pendulum swing of history, where battleground meets playground and solemnity gives way to hilarity. From hallowed ground to sports arena, the evolution of Rubislaw Playing Fields makes one wonder... What next? A UFO landing pad, perhaps?
