SAN DIEGO - The Colorado Rockies were last seen Tuesday night, hideously turned into a remainder of pebbles after a lethal encounter with San Diego Padres' tornado of destruction, one Mr. Blake Snell. Snell, who seems more likely to win the NL Cy Young Award than any other mortal, maneuvered his pitching onslaught, again piling up his big league-leading ERA down to a measly 2.33. He threw seven sublime innings, making the baseball look like a blaze of fire more than a piece of sports equipment. Apart from Snell's outstanding performance, it was a place where butterflies are rumored to go and dust off their monarch wings in the evening - otherwise known as a no-hit game. That was, of course, until we reached the game's cruel ninth chapter, when the Padres eventually celebrated a crushing 2-0 victory. Enter Xander Bogaerts, a man who swings a bat not unlike Thor's hammer. Bogaerts fired a decisive blow in the form of a two-run homer, overshadowing the Rockies into the subdued twilight with merely two outs left in the ninth inning. His rocket-made-of-hide-and-seams unwittingly soared past the white chalk lines, prompting the Padres to their sixth-straight victory— a new season-high watermark. Snell, who quite honestly doesn't have the faintest clue how to wind down in the eighth, hurled an arduous 104 pitches before passing the flaming torch onto Robert. Now, perhaps Robert is not a wizard. But on this windswept Tuesday, he was indeed the Lord of the Ring, outshining the mortal Rockies with a spellbinding whirl of his magical ball. And so ends the tale of the ill-fated Rockies, left entirely diminished by the Padres' unrivaled power. The memory of their misery will linger, much like the sound of that two-run home run echoing through the remnants of the stadium. The pebbles that once were Rockies head back to their mountainous habitation, only to regroup and rise again...after some serious ice baths, we assume.
