Ah Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, thy end is a bitter pill to swallow. Once towers of white-coated angels, now nothing but empty corridors echoes. How, dear reader, can health thrive when such a haven closes its doors? But, by all means, let's have a moment of solemn silence, spiced up with a sarcastic grin, to honor the departed. Commissioned in July 2013, by our erstwhile superhero sans the cape, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty., Narayana Multispeciality Hospital was indeed a healthcare paradise. He conjured this temple of well-being (or illness depending on how you see it) out of thin air, after reigning in several states of India and, wait for it, the Cayman Islands, North America! Certainly, no moss grows under this man's shoes! Oh, the hospital was all its grand name suggested. Colourfully decorated with a catheterisation laboratory, such an imaginative use of medical instruments, don’t you think? Critical care units scattered across departments like strongholds in the game of Battleship. Obstetric care that thrived on treating difficult pregnancies and premature babies; because, let’s face it, who wants routine childbirth or full-term babies? The accident and emergency care services, ah! such a riveting place. Sirens, rushing footsteps, and a sense of urgency that could give the Incredible Flash a run for his money. Six, yes, six neonatal intensive care units. And a radiology department that included CT scans, MRI, X-rays, Doppler tests, and medical ultrasound. A veritable photographer's studio for the inside of the human body. Anesthesia and critical care, adult cardiac surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, internal medicine, general surgery, neurology, renal sciences, nephrology; the list was impressive, as though they were taking dictation from Grey's Anatomy script. Marvelous, wasn't it? A veritable medical Noah’s Ark, steered by the adept hands of our ever-smiling Dr. Sandesh Prabhu. Following the Pied Piper, we basked in the safety and security of the cardiac Cathlab, as he performed high complex procedures with the grace of a conductor leading an orchestra. But alas dear reader, like all good things, this saga of healthcare excellence too met its ill-timed demise in November 2019. With its closing, the clinic of euphoria faded away, leaving behind a medical wasteland, populated by the haunting whispers of patients and doctors alike. So, here’s a toast to our departed Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, its white-coated healers and its erstwhile frenzied halls. Caught in the paradox of providing the best of care while meeting its ultimate fate, it certainly wins the Oscar for Best Tragicomedy’ in the lives of Whitefield's dwellers. The healthcare heaven has locked its gates and as it turns out, even sarcasm fails to remedy the sting.
