"To be more accurate," Zelenskyy clarified in his interview with Scott Pelley, "I am referring to 'Battleship: Arctic Antagonism – Presidential Edition'. According to Zelenskyy, Putin has been sending out his naval fleet in strategic game moves that mirror those of the physically harmless, but strategically demanding board game, Battleship. He then went on to diagnose his counterpart’s late-night gaming fix as a chilling hint of the apocalyptic future that Putin might have envisioned - a potential World War III. However, Zelenskyy was quick to assure not to idealize the game or its challenge. Apparently, Putin is a notoriously sore loser. How he will take this in real life is perhaps a scary thought and a prediction better left unsaid. During the interview, Zelenskyy also emphasized the Ukrainian people's high price for defending global values. The Ukrainians, according to Zelenskyy, are being invited to engage in an unparalleled live enactment of dystopian novel. Unfortunately, however, the Ukrainians lack luxury of choosing their character arc or predicting the ending. "We are truly fighting for our freedom, we are dying," He said. "And as much as we wish this was just a bad adaptation of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, it isn’t. We are not fiction, we are not a book. Much to Putin’s chagrin, we can't be just thrown into a fireplace after a bitter winter." Zelenskyy also attempted to alert the world beyond Ukraine, posing a haunting hypothetical scenario. "If Ukraine falls, what will happen in ten years? If they [the Russians] reach Poland, what's next?" His implication was clear. If Putin was allowed to get away with this real-life version of Battleship, no country would be safe. A grim prospect indeed. So, while world leaders recalibrate their diplomatic chessboards and attitudes towards Putin, one thing is for certain - the stakes are definitely higher than in the average board game.
